USDOT Intersection Safety Challenge

Derq Named USDOT Intersection Safety Challenge Winner

Derq is proud to be named a Tier 1 Stage 1B winner of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) Intersection Safety Challenge. As the only private-sector entity to secure a Tier 1 placement, this recognition underscores our commitment to advancing AI and machine learning technologies to identify and mitigate unsafe conditions involving vehicles and vulnerable road users at roadway intersections.

USDOT Intersection Safety Challenge

What is the USDOT Intersection Safety Challenge?

The Intersection Safety Challenge is a rigorous, multi-stage competition held by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to encourage teams of innovators and end-users to develop, prototype and test intersection safety systems (ISS) that leverage emerging technologies including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to identify and mitigate unsafe conditions involving vehicles and vulnerable road users at roadway intersections. The challenge draws on the expertise of researchers and practitioners across the United States, including universities, state and local agencies, private sector developers, and other organizations.

The Problem: Intersection Safety

Rising crashes and road user deaths

Proposed Solution: Teams Must Leverage Emerging Tech

  • Data fusion with new and existing sensors

  • Artificial intelligence

  • Low-cost, high-value solutions that can scale

In stage 1A, the winning teams each received $100,000 for proposing innovative concepts of intersection safety systems (ISS). The winning teams continued their participation in Stage 1B to further demonstrate technical aspects of their safety systems to identify vehicles and people moving on the road—both inside and outside of a vehicle—and predict potential collisions using real-world scenarios.

Stage 1B Winners

USDOT Intersection Safety Challenge winners stage 1B 2025

“Congratulations to the DOT Intersection Safety Challenge Stage 1B winners today. Enhancing the safety of vulnerable road users at our nation’s roadway intersections is a critically important element in driving down fatalities on our roads to zero.”

—Dr. Robert C. Hampshire, USDOT Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Chief Scientist

Improving the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users is of critical importance to achieving the USDOT’s vision of zero roadway deaths and serious injuries: a vision that defines our core mission at Derq. The Intersection Safety Challenge supports these Departmental priorities, supports the National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS), and sets the stage for the future deployment of roadway intersection safety systems nationwide. Read our Derq FAQ to find answers to common questions about our AI-powered roadway safety technology: including how it works, what it detects, how it protects privacy, and how agencies use it to improve operations and reduce risk.
